Extreme weather events cause significant crop yield losses at the farm level in German agriculture

چکیده
Extreme weather events frequently cause severe crop yield losses, affecting food security and farmers’ incomes. In this paper, we aim to provide a holistic assessment of these impacts across various extreme multiple crops. More specifically, estimate compare the impact frost, heat, drought waterlogging on yields winter wheat, barley, rapeseed grain maize production in Germany. We analyse 423,815 farm-level observations between 1995 2019, account for conditions within critical phenological phases. Furthermore, monetarize historical losses due spatially disaggregated level. find that is main driver monetary German agriculture. For instance, single day can reduce wheat by up 0.36%. It estimated during period 1995–2019, summer led which, average, caused annual revenues sink over 23 million Euro vary considerably space time. example, only most important region North Germany was prone heat flowering. Moreover, frost are generally less relevant from an economic point view, but nevertheless crop- regional-specific damage. Our analysis provides stakeholders with information weather-related risk management adaptation strategies.

Understanding the weather signal in national crop-yield variability: Weather-signal in crop-yield variability
Year-to-year variations in crop yields can have major impacts on the livelihoods of subsistence farmers and may trigger significant global price fluctuations, with severe consequences for people in developing countries. Fluctuations can be induced by weather conditions, management decisions, weeds, diseases, and pests. Although an explicit quantification and deeper understanding of weather-indu...

متن کاملAnalysis of Weather Generators: Extreme Events
Stochastic weather generators (WGs) are often used to simulate synthetic weather time series based on observed statistical properties in a particular location. Most studies evaluate WG skill based on average properties. Our objective is to assess how the WGs performs in simulating extremes, especially high precipitation amounts. We analyzed 13 different WGs using two parallel approaches: extrem...
متن کاملExtreme Weather Events, Mortality and Migration
We estimate the effect of extreme weather on life expectancy in the US. Using high frequency mortality data, we find that both extreme heat and extreme cold result in immediate increases in mortality. However, the increase in mortality following extreme heat appears entirely driven by near-term displacement, while the increase in mortality following extreme cold is long lasting. The aggregate e...
